Justin White

Head Instructor Justin White has studied the fighting arts for over 20 years, starting with Aikido and Wrestling. During his time as a cadet at the Texas Maritime Academy, he expanded his knowledge with Judo and the striking arts while traveling the world by sea to train as a Maritime Officer. It was during this time that he began to teach.

After graduation, White moved to Saint Paul, MN. For the next four years he trained – and competed in – professional mixed martial arts under Team Bison Grappling Arts and later Ambition MMA. He trained alongside veterans of StrikeForce, Bellator and the UFC, along with numerous regional champions and some of the highest ranked fighters in the sport. He worked as an assistant coach, corner-man and instructor during this time, while also working a regular job as a research scientist for the University of Minnesota (this earned him the nickname Justin “The Mad Scientist” White).

Justin White founded Mad Science MMA (the precursor to Mad Science Defense) at Fort Leavenworth, KS, in 2010 to train fighters, whether for competition, personal defense, or military service. Since that time, he has been trained by the U.S Army in Basic and Tactical Modern Army Combatives, as well as in the Close Combat System formerly used by the U.S. Marines. In 2012 he became one of the first civilians ever trained in the Army’s Special Operations Combatives Program.

Under the Mad Science MMA banner, Instructor White has trained hundreds of soldiers from all branches of the Armed Forces as well as personnel from over 10 allied nations. He has served hundreds of volunteer hours teaching combatives to soldiers through the Modern Army Combatives Program at Fort Leavenworth, and instructed numerous seminars on Combatives and Personal Defense. On the competition side, his fighters have earned a well-deserved reputation for skill, mental toughness and ruthless aggression in the cage, winning numerous regional bouts, including championship titles in the 145, 155, and 205 pound divisions.

In 2010, he was awarded a Shodan black belt in Japanese Jujitsu (under the Midori Yama Budokai) by CPT Joe Procter of the US Army. And in 2014 he was awarded a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by Mike Liera Sr. of The Arena Gym, San Diego, where he trained under Master Baret Yoshida.

In 2016 the Army moved the family to Gainesville, Florida, where Instructor White continued to teach and train at Global Mixed Martial Arts Academy under Professor Jason Dodd. At Global MMA, Instructor White taught BJJ, JJJ, MMA, and Dutch Kickboxing, while also heading up the Academy’s combatives and tactics training for Military and Law Enforcement. In 2019, Instructor White received his Black Belt and Instructor stripes from Professor Dodd under Robert Drysdale’s Zenith BJJ lineage.

An NRA Pistol Instructor and Army spouse, White has recently relocated Mad Science Defense from Gainesville to outside Baltimore, MD.
